The Lighthouse โ€” smallest island, biggest first impression.

The Lighthouse is where every How to Fish run begins: you crash, you wake up, and you learn the game's entire loop in miniature โ€” catch creatures, feed the locals, earn money, gear up, and beat the first boss. Everything on this island exists to teach you the basics, but there are still a few ways to waste your first hour.

Getting Started on the Lighthouse

Your character starts hungry, and hunger matters more than you'd expect. Pick up clams off the beach and consume them to fill the hunger meter. The same clams double as currency: throw them to the Lighthouse Keeper and he pays you cash for them โ€” that's your first source of income before you even own a rod.

The purchase order that works:

  1. Basic Fishing Rod โ€” $3. Your first buy. Cast the free lure and you'll pull up Brown Crab and Shrimp within minutes.
  2. Knife. Small catches die to your bare hands, but the knife makes everything faster. Sharpen it at the anvil by the lighthouse door โ€” damage jumps to 20.
  3. Hot Dog Lure โ€” $1 each. Needed for the bigger crustaceans: Rock Crab and Lobster.
  4. Beer Can. The key to the island's real content (see below).

Small catches, small prices โ€” the Lighthouse teaches the loop cheaply.

Good to KnowYou don't need any weapon for the Lighthouse's regular catches โ€” they're all easy kills. Save your early money for the rod, the knife upgrade and the Beer Can, and you'll clear the island fast.

All Lighthouse Fish

Only five creatures live in Lighthouse waters: four regular crustaceans and the island's boss. Once you've caught all four regulars, check the encyclopedia (Tab) โ€” the Lighthouse section is complete and it's time to fight.

The Lighthouse Keeper's Beer Can Quest

The Keeper trades drinks for the boss key โ€” it's a fair deal, honestly.

The Lighthouse Keeper is more than a clam buyer โ€” he's the gatekeeper of your first boss. The Spider Crab won't take ordinary bait; it demands the Empty Beer Can, and you have to earn that can through the island's only quest:

  1. Earn some money from your first catches and clam hand-ins.
  2. Buy a Beer Can. A normal Beer Can โ€” not a special item, just the drink.
  3. Give the Beer Can to the Lighthouse Keeper. He drinks it on the spot.
  4. Take the Empty Beer Can he hands back.
  5. Equip the Empty Beer Can as bait and cast near the island.
  6. Reel in the Spider Crab โ€” the boss fight starts as soon as it bites.
Watch OutA full Beer Can won't summon the boss. You need the emptied version โ€” the quest exists specifically to produce it. Don't drink it yourself.

How to Beat the Spider Crab

The Spider Crab is the easiest boss in the game, but it still punishes impatient players. Here's the pattern that works every time:

  • Don't run far away. At range it starts jumping, and the jumps are what actually waste time and stamina.
  • Bait the charge. Stand at mid-range and let it wind up its charging attack.
  • Move sideways as it charges โ€” it will miss and slam into the ground.
  • Punish the stun. After a missed charge it's stunned. Get in 2โ€“4 hits comfortably, then back off and repeat.
  • Watch the white bar under its health pool. If it drains completely, the crab escapes and you restart the whole fight. Stay on the offensive.

A sharpened knife (20 damage) makes this fight several minutes shorter. The shotgun from Island 2 is overkill โ€” you don't need to wait for it.

What Unlocks Next

When the Spider Crab dies, it drops meat โ€” feed that to the Lighthouse Keeper to complete his quest. He rewards you with keys for the boat. Before you sail, buy the Radar ($10) from him as well; you'll want it for navigation, and the Forest is only a short trip northwest.

From here the game opens up properly: the Forest introduces lures, weapons and your first mini-bosses. Continue with the Forest Island guide โ†’
