Every island expects a different bait. Bring the right one and the fishing is easy.

Half of How to Fish is having the right bait for the right water. This guide collects every lure, food bait and quest bait in the game โ€” what they cost, where they come from, and exactly which creatures bite them.

How Bait Works

Bait falls into three families, and understanding the split saves you a lot of wasted casts:

  • Lure tiers are the backbone. Each island's regular fish mostly share one tier, so you buy the tier, equip it, and farm the whole island.
  • Food baits (Hot Dog, Ham, French Fry) are cheap consumables that work on early-island catches โ€” some as alternatives to lures.
  • Quest baits are unique, non-purchasable items earned from NPCs. The five story bosses each demand one, and no shop sells a substitute.

Each island is a new water body with its own bait economy.

One extra rule: after Island 3, regular catches stop accepting the cheap food baits entirely โ€” each island from the Desert onward is locked to its own lure tier (Standard โ†’ Professional โ†’ Scientific).

Food Baits

Food baits are only relevant on the first two islands โ€” from the Desert onward, regular catches ignore them. The three that matter:

  • Hot Dog ($1) โ€” Rock Crab and Lobster on the Lighthouse, and a valid alternative for Piranha in the Forest. The only food bait worth buying on purpose.
  • Ham โ€” an alternative for Brown Crab and Shrimp; the free lure does the same job, so don't spend money on it.
  • French Fry โ€” an alternative for Mackerel, Gar and Pike; again, the free lure already covers these.

Practical takeaway: buy Hot Dogs for the Lighthouse, then leave food baits behind entirely.

Quest Baits

Quest baits can't be bought โ€” and they can't be replaced.

Five story bosses can only be summoned with quest baits โ€” unique items that no shop sells. Here's every one and how to get it:

Quest BaitSummonsHow to Get It
Empty Beer CanSpider Crab (Island 1)Buy a Beer Can, give it to the Lighthouse Keeper; he returns it empty.
Modified LeechGiant Piranha (Island 2)Find three leeches on the Forest floor (not in water) and return them to the woman by the lake.
CarrotPufferfish (Island 3)Catch a Needlefish and give it to the Tourist under the tree.
TunaAlbatross (Island 4)Catch the Tuna mini-boss, then place its body on the ground as bait.
Fish BucketBowhead Whale (Island 5)Feed the hazmat NPC five native Volcano fish; the fifth hand-in rewards the bucket.
Watch OutThe Bowhead Whale's body doubles as the final boss's trigger โ€” throw it into the volcano crater after defeating it. And keep every quest bait until its quest is done; a consumed quest bait usually means re-fighting the boss.
