How to Fish Walkthrough
Last verified: August 27, 2026

How to Fish — the whole game is one long, slightly absurd trip home.
How to Fish starts at the Lighthouse and turns into a full island-hopping adventure: catch creatures, complete NPC quests, beat bosses and return their trophies to unlock the next destination. The route is always the same — Lighthouse → Forest → Desert → Rocks → Volcano — but how fast you move depends on your money, your gear and how many fish you stop to collect.

Each island is its own fishing pool, quest hub and boss arena.
How Progression Works
The single most important thing to understand: progress comes from quests, not from how much you catch. You could fish for hours and never unlock a new island. Every island has one or two NPC quests, each ending in a boss fight. Beat the boss, take its quest drop, return it to the NPC, and you get the coordinates (or keys) for the next island.
Two rules save you a lot of pain:
- Boss meat is not the same thing as a boss trophy. When a boss drops a quest item, that item is for the quest — don't grill it, don't sell it. Selling a quest drop can soft-lock an island until you re-summon the boss.
- Every boss has an escape timer. The white bar under a boss's health pool drains as the fight goes on. If it empties, the boss escapes and you restart the fight from full health. Stay close, keep attacking, and finish the job.
The Tab encyclopedia is your collection tracker: Collector wants every normal creature found and killed, and Fishipedia wants every rare Drip variant. Islands unlock new entries in both lists, so the collection target grows as you progress.
Island 1 · Lighthouse
Everyone starts here. You wake up with a free rod and a hunger meter — eat clams you pick up off the beach, and throw some to the Lighthouse Keeper, who pays you cash for them. Your first purchase is the Basic Fishing Rod ($3).
- Fish: Brown Crab, Shrimp, Rock Crab, Lobster + the Spider Crab boss (5 total)
- Bait: Free Lure for crabs and shrimp; Hot Dog ($1) for Rock Crab and Lobster
- Boss: Spider Crab — summon it with the Empty Beer Can from the Keeper's quest
- Unlocks: boat keys (first quest reward), then buy the Radar ($10) for the trip
Buy a knife early and sharpen it at the anvil by the lighthouse door (damage goes up to 20) — it makes your first boss fight dramatically faster.

Island 2 · Forest
Northwest of the Lighthouse, the Forest is where the game opens up: nine new regular catches, your first real lures (Beginner Lure) and your first guns. The shotgun is the best all-round weapon in the game — save for it.
- Fish: 9 regular catches + Sunfish and The Old Pike mini-bosses + the Giant Piranha (12 total)
- Bait: Free Lure, Beginner Lure and Hot Dog all work here
- Boss: Giant Piranha — summon it with the Modified Leech from the woman by the lake
- Unlocks: the lake woman gives you coordinates for the Desert
The leech quest is easy to fumble: the three leeches you need are on the ground, not in the water. Walk the forest floor and look for them lying around before you assume the quest is bugged.
Island 3 · Desert
Another hop northwest. The Desert is much easier to farm than the Forest because nearly every regular catch uses the same Standard Lure. Two quests live here: the Blue Shark mini-boss unlocks the grill, and the Pufferfish is the story boss.
- Fish: 10 regular catches (including the endangered Needlefish, Seahorse and Bowlfish) + Blue Shark mini-boss + the Pufferfish (12 total)
- Bait: Standard Lure; Standard Boss Lure for the Blue Shark; Carrot for the Pufferfish
- Boss: Pufferfish — the Carrot comes from the Tourist's quest (catch him a Needlefish first)
- Unlocks: the grill (1.5x sell multiplier, forever) and coordinates for Rocks
The grill changes the economy: every fish you cook sells for 1.5x. From this island on, grill everything before selling.
Island 4 · Rocks
Before leaving for Rocks, buy the Radar upgrade for your boat if you haven't — you can place the radar as a stationary unit on the boat instead of holding it. The island itself has one quest: the shop NPC warns you about a giant bird.
- Fish: 10 regular catches (all Professional Lure) + the Tuna mini-boss + the Albatross (12 total)
- Bait: Professional Lure; Professional Boss Lure for Tuna; the Tuna itself lures the Albatross
- Boss: Albatross — the one boss you can't hook with a rod
- Unlocks: the Albatross's head opens the route to the Volcano
How to Catch the Albatross
- Buy the Professional Boss Lure and cast on the Rocks island.
- Defeat the Tuna. It throws itself at you — dodge the leap, then punish it with the shotgun.
- Do not sell the Tuna. Pick it up and drop it on the ground.
- Wait a few seconds. The Albatross flies down and takes the bait.
- Fight it at range. Use the Uzi or Sniper Rifle, not the shotgun — it stays at distance and its ranged "gift" actually damages you. Take cover when it reloads.
- Keep its head. Feed it to the shop NPC for the Volcano coordinates.
Island 5 · Volcano
The Volcano sits directly north of Rocks. It holds the highest-tier fish in the game (Scientific Lure, $500 each) and the final two bosses. You'll meet an NPC in a yellow hazmat suit who drives the whole finale.
- Fish: 5 regular catches (all Scientific Lure) + the Goblin Shark mini-boss + Bowhead Whale + Mutated Bowhead Whale (8 total)
- Bait: Scientific Lure; Scientific Boss Lure ($5,800) for the optional Goblin Shark; Fish Bucket for the whale
- Bosses: Bowhead Whale → throw its body in the volcano → Mutated Bowhead Whale (final boss)
- Ending: feed the final boss's fin to the hazmat NPC → military boat key → sail to the mainland → credits
How to Reach the Ending
- Feed the hazmat NPC five native Volcano fish. Catch any of the five Scientific-Lure creatures and hand them over, one by one — the fifth reward is the Fish Bucket.
- Buy the Assault Rifle and upgrade it a couple of times before the whale fight. The Bowhead Whale isn't aggressive, but run away whenever it takes to the air.
- Keep the whale carcass. Don't sell it — carry it to the wooden planks and climb the volcano.
- Throw the Bowhead Whale into the crater. The final encounter starts immediately.
- Beat the Mutated Bowhead Whale. It's bigger, tougher, spits lava, and two hits can kill you — stock healing items and consider a run to the military base first.
- Take its fin and feed it to the hazmat NPC. He gives you the key to the military boat, which sails you to the mainland. Credits roll.
After the Ending

The mainland is the goal — but the collection keeps you on the water.
You can keep playing after the credits on the same save, retaining every purchase and weapon upgrade. That's when most people finish the collection: catch every normal creature (Collector), every Drip variant (Fishipedia), try for weapon skins on the casino roulette, and hunt the speedrun achievement — the final boss can be reached in about an hour if you skip everything.
Still hungry for detail? The fish database has every creature with bait and value, and the boss page breaks down every fight. If you're just starting, the beginner guide covers your first hour.
